The Story of Savitri Art
CONCEPTION OF SAVITRI PAINITNG
Savitri Painting took birth in 2020 during covid lockdown when 12 young women came together, led by Divyanshi, to transform the covid-created difficulty into an opportunity for inner progress. They took up lines from Savitri, a mantric poem written by the Indian sage Sri Aurobindo, and started painting these lines as means to dive deep into the transformative power of the poem.

Sacred Poetry of Savitri

Meditative Painting
While painting they also listened to music composed by Sunil Bhattacharya who composed it under the guidance of the Mother, Mirra Alfassa, the spiritual collaborator of Sri Aurobindo. They also took inspiration from the paintings done by Huta who was guided by the Mother to paint the lines from Savitri.

Savitri Paintings of Participants
Inspired by the whole experience they invited more people to paint and a 5-week Savitri Painting intensive course took birth to systematically help the participants to paint their soul's language without necessarily having prior training as an artist The Savitri Painting course now has 150 alumni, two years since its conception.
BIRTH OF THE SAVITRI ART SANGHA
After receiving a series of visions at a meditation retreat in April 2021, Divyanshi formed a core group from the Savitri Painting Alumni consisiting of Usha, Padmarani and Sahana to recreate these visions as paintings.
The paintings you find here are made by artists who are self-taught and doing painting as a means for their inner progress under the guidance of mentors Manoj, Divyanshi, Archana and Sushanto.
Savitri Art emerged from the sacred space of aspiration for inner and outer perfection. The inner perfection for the reception of the highest essence and the outer perfection for the expression of the beauty in form.
SAVITRI ART FEATURED IN THE HINDU

"Auroville’s 'Savitri Art' initiative led by artists Usha Arvind and Padmarani Vandemataram Presingu have contributed a section of 12 paintings, almost a sub-genre, based on the verses from Aurobindo’s magnum opus “Savitri” based on the Mahabharata — Aurovilians have a long tradition since the 1980s of group reading the poem under the central banyan tree, a shared passion that led to the formation of the Auroville Savitri Study Circle and establishment of Savitri Bhavan." THE MOTHER ON SAVITRI
OUR ATTEMPT
From the first offering of 21 paintings on 15 August 2021 as a video exhibition, the Savitri Art Sangha has grown and has now offered 150 paintings on the occasion of Sri Aurobindo's 150th birth anniversary which were exhibited in Savitri Bhavan.
Savitri Art is a sadhana of learning how to receive feedback to create that perfection of the inner and outer essence of the paintings. To have that inner sense of humility to not be attached to one's own creation. To surrender to the vision of the paintings, learning to receive truly and persevere to create the highest one can.
